Key information about roof repairs

What sort of roof repairs can be carried out?

Common repairs include replacing fixings - usually replacing old nails with more modern and efficient screws with rubber washers, replacing small areas of the roof which are worn or damaged, removing mould or mildew and repainting.

Can I carry out repairs myself?

Doing your own repairs is not recommended. Working at height on a roof can be dangerous if you don't have the right experience and equipment. Trying to undertake your own repairs can also risk the repair not being done properly, or even further damage to your roof.

What happens if my roof is beyond repair?

Sometimes, repairs won't be possible, or the roof will be damaged to such an extent that repairs are not a cost-effective solution. In these cases we recommend re-roofing instead. We can carry out an inspection and let you know if this is the best option. If repairs have already been started before the decision to replace the roof is made, we can refund the cost of the repair.

Can I stay in the house while the roof is being repaired?

Yes, you should be able to. For minor repairs, disruption should be minimal, although you may need to clear space to give us access to work. We ensure your home stays dry during any repair work.

Three reasons you might need roof repairs

For old corrugated iron roofs, the most common cause of leaks is the roof’s fixing. Traditionally, nails were used to fix roofs, and these can lift or rust over time.

If unskilled or untrained people have been walking around on your roof, this can cause dents and depressions which can lead to water pooling and leaks.

A general lack of maintenance in the past can lead to issues such as mould or mildew growth and damage which can result in a leaky roof.

Waterproofing for flat roofs

Flat roofs don't naturally allow for water run-off like pitched roofs do, which means water can pool on the surface. Left unnoticed, this can lead to issues such as leaks and structural damage.

So, if you have a flat roof on any part of your property, we recommend waterproofing. This can help to:

  • Prevent leaks and interior damage in areas like ceilings and roof insulation by preventing water from seeping through cracks or joins.
  • Extend the roof’s lifespan by protecting it from standing water, UV rays, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Reducing maintenance and repair costs
It's important that waterproofing is done by a professional to prevent issues from incorrect application. We offer a high-quality paintable membrane from Traffiguard - a leading manufacturer of waterproofing products. It can also be used for balconies and decks.
